Regional meeting on transport of radioactive materials opens in Kigali

Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has today hosted regional training course on the transportation of radioactive materials.
The 5-day training has brought together participants from Angola, Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
RURA official have announced that the training will harmonize several major elements related to the transport of radioactive materials.
Components of transport that will be addressed during this training include; use of radioactive material and regulatory frame work for their safe transport, regulatory of terminology, basic safety concepts of the IAEA transport regulations, radiation protection in transportation.
Others areas include: material classification and package types, material and design and test requirements, requirements and control for transport, approval and notification of package designs and shipments and transport inspections.
Officials have further confirmed that participants will train in planning and preparing for emergency response to transport accidents involving radioactive and overview of the technical guide compliance inspections by the African Competent Authorities on transport of these material.
