At least three people were killed and five injured on the night of February5 by Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) local authorities have confirmed.
Gilbert Habyarimana, the Mayor of Rubavu District said that the victims were entering Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) using paths which FDLR militias use to attack Rwanda.
“They army fired at them thinking Rwanda had been attacked but we have after closer examination of their identity discovered that they were Rwandan smugglers of second-hand clothes , the injured are undergoing medication,” Habyarimana told The Light Magazine in a telephone interview.
"Three people were killed. They had been mistaken for enemies," he added.
Rwanda has maintained its stance on the prohibition of second-hand clothes.
Last year’s attack by FDLR through the same border left at least seven FDLR combatants killed.
Since misunderstandings with neighbouring countries heightened a week before there were media reports that Rwanda had heavily deployed at its border expecting an attack, which the Foreign Affairs Minister dismissed as baseless during a press briefing earlier in March.
