Beauty isn’t about having a pretty face. It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Not until a young Rwandan woman emerged from the Karongi District to participate in the Miss Rwanda 2019 beauty pageant that many fairly appreciated the meaning of beauty.

Every Rwandan and whoever followed this year’s Miss Rwanda thing cannot miss a first class degree if the only question in the examination is: “Who was the centre of attraction in Miss Rwanda 2019?”

Josiane Mwiseneza,23, has enjoyed huge and growing popularity going by the media coverage she has so far received and continues to enjoy.

With her dark skin complexion, natural hair and a humble social background and appealing demeanor, she was the direct opposite of what many were used to seeing in the previous Rwandan beauty pageant editions.

She compelled singers compose new songs about her story leave alone the sermons of preachers and speeches of some leaders. Sooner or later there will be a poet about her. And, the business community found great business out of T-shirts inscribed with the picture of the rural girl who only reached Kigali city after an encounter with a stone that left a permanent mark on one of the toes of her left foot.

Mwiseneza defined by a humble background and a typical rural gal said that to reach the screening venue in Western Province, she had to negotiate with over five kilometers on foot. For this she became the much-followed contestant and she would attract the loudest applause from her fans and supporters whenever she catapulted onto the podium.

The disturbing hilly landscape, thirsty and hunger plus the scorching Sun could not alter her ambition and motivation even by an inch.

In spite of widespread mockery, burden of speaking a foreign language and obviously the lifestyle in the booty camp and city life, her ambition and inner drive to excel remained intact.

The jury met everyone’s expectations when she scooped the Miss Popularity title after she had garnered thousands of public votes and shares, topping the list of over 30 beauty queens who honourably conceded defeat.

Seek the kingdom of Heaven and other things will follow you. That is for the Bible people. For Mwiseneza it would not be an understatement to say: Discover the girl power within you and other things will follow you.

Besides the coveted title she’ll have for a year she got a brand new car and numerous freebies from individuals who appreciate that success is in one’s hands and lies in the strong conviction of their self-worth – which the name Josiane Mwiseneza represents among many Rwandans.

She has become a true model and source of inspiration to millions of young people across the globe and Rwanda in particular. It’s no longer news that delegations from overseas travelled to Rwanda to have a face-to-face chat with the young lady with unique courage, infectious and ubiquitous smile.

Besides transforming her looks and physique in a few weeks her life will never be the same. The energy she put into Miss Rwanda beauty pageant is the reason many look forward to the next edition.
