Shock has gripped Tanzania and the region after a ferry known as MV Nyerere capsized Thursday afternoon in Lake Victoria with scores feared dead. Official government sources said about 40 are feared dead while 100 have so far been rescued.
Tanzania military is doing their best to rescue close to 500 occupants, reported local media.
The Tanzanian Ministry of Construction, Transport and Communication confirmed the horrific incident in a statement.
"The Tanzanian Electrical and Mechanical Services Agency (TEMESA) would like to inform the public that the ferry connecting Bugolora islands in Ukerewe district, Mwanza province, capsized in the afternoon," the statement reads.
"Temesa urges members of the public to be patient as more details about the unfortunate incident continue to be released."
