Democratic Republic of Congo’s ruling party, the People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy has today named Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, a former Interior Minister its flag-bearer in the highly anticipated December Presidential polls.
The country’s Information Minister Lambert Mende confirmed this development today which is the deadline for submission of candidature according to national electoral body, CENI.
Ramazani Shadary, 57 is a renowned Congolese politician who has served in different ranks as a legislator and governor of the Maniema Province will replace President Joseph Kabila if the opposition loses to the ruling party in the elections.
President Kabila who delayed the elections after his term ended last year has been the Congolese President since 2001. The Constitution prohibits him from seeking a third term.
His delay to pronounce his stand on whether he will stand or step down as President had attracted scathing criticism from Western powers, especially the US and Human Rights watchdogs. By press time Kabila had not broken his long silence on the matter.
Meanwhile, the principal political rival and likely main challenger of the Congolese ruling party Moise Katumbi, a former Governor of Katanga Province is still crying foul play outside the DRC borders.
Felix Tshisekedi, son of veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi and former VP Jean Pierre Bemba are among the long list of Presidential hopefuls.
Observers, however, say the ruling party heads for a soft landing if Katumbi remains outside the race and returning peace and an end to one of the longest conflict in the region which DRC hosts remains in balance.
Yet, insecurity in Eastern DRC remains on high scale and violence had escalated in recent days.
