Thousands of pilgrims have today thronged Namugongo martyrs' shrine to celebrate the 132nd anniversary of Christian martyrdom that took place in Uganda.

Tororo Archdiocese in Eastern Uganda led this year’s celebrations which attracted hundreds of enthusiastic international pilgrims from India, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, United States, Malawi, Australia, Singapore and Nigeria among others.

Every June 3, Christians subscribing to both Catholic and Anglican Christian denominations convene at Namugongo in the periphery of the capital Kampala to remember about 45 martyrs killed by the king of Buganda Kingdom, Kabaka Mwanga II between 1985 and 1986.

King Mwanga II killed the Christianity convert because they refused to denounce their new religion and demonstrate absolute obedience to the king which is a cultural obligation for all his subjects.

Forerunner activities included a mass for Nyerere’s canonization led by Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Lwanga. Mama Maria Nyerere attended this mass.
