Marie-Chantal Rwakazina,45, has won by a landslide to become a new Mayor of the City of Kigali in now the second by-election held during this term. Rwakazina garnered 146 votes against eight that went to her fellow contestant Henriette Murekatete.
Economist Rwakazina replaces Mayor Pascal Nyamulinda who resigned his job nearly a month ago.
Before she joined active politics Rwakazina had served as a lecturer of Economics at the University of Rwanda. She has also worked with the United Nations (UN) as a Coordinator of UN support programmes in Rwanda.
The mother of two represents Nduba Sector at the council of the City of Kigali.
