Rwanda is set to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2020, it was announced at this year’s CHOGM held in central London.
Held every two years, Rwanda will be the first African nation to host the meeting since neighbouring Uganda in 2007. Rwanda was chosen against Fiji and Malaysia which pulled out after its Prime Minister decided not to attend the meeting.
The country was represented at the gathering by President Paul Kagame and the First Lady Jeannette Kagame.
Rwanda joined the group of nations that are former British colonies in 2009 becoming the second country without any direct colonial ties to Britain after Mozambique. The Commonwealth is a community of 54 countries with a combined population of about 2.4 billion.
