A new district Sanitation Centre was on Thursday inaugurated in Rwamagana to serve over 300,000 residents by availing a wide range of sanitation technologies and products, and oversee the district’s growing access to sanitation services.

The centre referred to as Isuku Iwacu will host trainings, provide sanitation technologies, products, services like improved latrines and home hand-washing stations. The major objective is to create sustainable access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services.

The facility was funded by the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) and is implemented by the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV).

“SNV is now excited to be implementing USAID funded Isuku Iwacu project that will support the government of Rwanda’s sanitation work,” said Phomolo Maphosa, SNV Rwanda Country Director at the Inauguration.

Different officials attended the event including Sheikh Bahame Hassan, a director general at the ministry of local government, Leslie Marbury, USAID’s Acting Mission Director and local government officials.

The centre is in line with Rwanda’s 2016 National Sanitation Policy and Implementation Strategy to effectively market sanitation products and services at the household level. The opened centre is among eight planned sanitation centres being built by the USAID Isuku Iwacu activity which will be owned and operated by districts.

The setup of the facility has three sections, a training area, selling point to exhibit different sanitation products and hand washing facilities.

Building District Sanitation Centres is a four-year Rwf9.2 billion project that will see more establishments in Kayonza, Nyanza, Ruhango, Nyabihu, Ngoma, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro.
