Girls outperformed boys in the 2017 national examinations for both Primary Leaving Examination and Ordinary Level Examinations according to the results released by the Ministry of Education this Tuesday.
The figures show that girls represent 55.5 per cent of those who passed at Primary six, while boys constitute 44.5 per cent and in ordinary level, girls represent 52.05 and boys 47.95 per cent.
Girls surpassed boys not only in overall figure of pass rate, but also dominated in the category of best performing student in all subjects at ordinary level with seven girls and one boy.
Mugisha Nsengiyumva Frank from St Andre in Muhanga District and Sifayare Schadrack from Bright Academy in Gatsibo District were the two best performers at primary level.
Karenzi Manzi Joslyn from Kigali Parents School in Gasabo District and Umurerwa Audrey of Mary Hills in Nyagatare District became the best performers at ordinary level.
In general, candidates who sat for examinations at ordinary level in 2017 were 96,595 as compared to 89,421 in 2016 and the general pass rate is 89,9 % as compared to 89 % in 2016.
The Minister of State in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Isaac Munyakazi said that among the factors that contributed to this success is the school feeding programme that was introduced in 12-year basic education schools countrywide and the fact that going to school is no longer a favour but a right to all Rwandan children to access education.
Munyakazi added that they have released the results two weeks before the official opening of 2018 academic year to help parents prepare their children for school.
“REB has put in a lot of effort this year to boost efficiency, we are releasing these results almost two weeks ahead of the opening of the academic year which is 22 January, and this will help parents prepare their children for their respective schools,” observed Munyakazi.
Meanwhile, students can access their exam results by checking on Rwanda Education Board website (www.reb.rw) or on phone as Primary candidates can write; P6 – index number and send SMS to 489 and for ordinary level, a candidate can write S3 – Index number and send SMS on 489.
