Rwanda commemorates Heroes day

Kigali: President Paul Kagame, government officials and family members of the designated national heroes today attended a wreath-laying ceremony held at the Heroes Mausoleum in remera, Kigali City.
Celebrations to mark the 2017 Heroes’ Day was held at the village level to engage citizen participation at the grass roots and for neighbors to share in the spirit of the national day.
Rwanda national Heroes are placed in three categories: Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi.
Imanzi includes those who sacrificed own lives such as Maj Gen Fred Rwigema, who launched the liberation war and the Unknown Soldier who represents all known and unknown combatants who perished in the struggle for the liberation of the country .
Imena category features heroes remembered for their extraordinary acts such as King Mutara III Rudahigwa, Michel Rwagasana, Agathe Uwingilimana, Sister Félicité Niyitegeka and Nyange Secondary School students.
Until now, nobody is in the Ingenzi, which includes heroes who are still alive.
